Remember the time 3985 pulled the circus train?

As of right now the word on the street is 3985 is permanently retired. She might end up being parted out for 4014 or stuffed and mounted at the UP museum roundhouse.

Either way, I don't expect to see the likes of 3985 run again. I guess they have also retired the E9 Trio and the DDA40X. The DDA40 was down to one engine and suffering electrical faults. The E9 Trio needs wheels and other repairs. It's going to be 844/4014 for a while and not much else. Even the steamers might be in trouble after this year. The UP will need to figure out how to install PTC on them or retire them since their request for a waiver was denied by the FRA.

Let's not jump to too many conclusions yet. I've heard enough about 3985, and while I have a reasonably plausible theory based on what Ed Dickens has said, I'm going to keep it to myself at the moment.

As for the denial of the waiver, the FRA said UP doesn't need a wavier to run its locomotives (844, 3985, and 4014). Yes, UP applied for 3 waivers. Take that for what you will.

Those are great! Hope they can be released. At any rate they're beautiful.
