Celanese is a chemical company known for producing intermediate chemicals, chemicals used in further manufacturing processes elsewhere. Viscose is the chemical that forms synthetic fiber known as Rayon. These factories popped up in the early 1920s just after WW1 created the need for them. Many were located inland, harder to find by enemy bombers, sited near rivers, railroads and coal supplies. The process was rather dirty, pollution-wise and most that are torn down are Superfund sites today.
