Thread: AI Train speed issue

    Default AI Train speed issue

Yes, my trainsim addiction is back with a vengeance.

One problem I am facing with my AI traffic deals with 2 trains sharing the same path.
Train 1: Operates at normal speed (for LGE 4.0 this is 320kmph) and follows speeds properly (this train starts at 15:00)
Train 2: Starts on same path but at 15:20 (20mins ahead of the first train) but has its speed fixed at 266km/ph despite passing by a clear signal+ a 320kmph speed limit marker
Also both trains stop at the same stations ( two of which are at the very beggining and very end)

    Tried and tested
Both eng files maxvelocity is 320kmph. So they can operate at that speed when allowed
Increasing the time gap between both trains did not make a difference (second train was still at 266kmph in a 320kmph zone)
Created a new path 5 signals before Train 1 then overlapping the original path for Train 1 to run on. (train 2 still maxed at 266)
Started Train 2 on a different track then merged with Train 1 path(this train still started 20 minutes later than Train 1 despite being on a different track) And yes the path taken after train 2 departed overlapped train 1's path once it left the station.
Problem persists in both openrails and msts.

I always thought giving trains at least a 15+min time gap despite running on the same path would be enough to allow the train to operate normally. But for some reason the train behind always gets a weird handicap.

EDIT: (tested this with 2 extra traffic pieces and got the same result). For some reason the first piece of traffic does fine but after that they get a speed handicap.

EDIT: Will be remaking activity in Open Rails.

You don't say MSTS or Open Rails so I will chat a bit about activities in MSTS and OR.
Yes, getting AI to perform as wanted was a terrible task in MSTS. Getting it 'right' sometimes drives you nuts.
This is one of the reasons I went to Open Rails. . . . And never looked back.

In Open Rails the Dispatcher HUD screen shows all trains that are running on a route and if stopped, the reason for the stop be it signal, station or whatever reason. Coding a huge activity with over 80 AI traffic trains took me about 3 hours and none of the baloney where you have to start "3 signal blocks back", double reverse points and the like. A breath of fresh air for activity coding.
So if this activity you're running is under MSTS, good luck. I took the plunge and now enjoy writing activities that actually perform as they should.

Whoops. I was making the activity in MSTS AE, but running it on open rails. I'll take you up on that note and use Open Rails to create my activities from now on. Let the rage and excitement of learning something new begin. Thanks for the advice Vince.

Forgive me if I have missed something, but is there an activity editor now available in Open Rails?

Let me clarify if I may.
I created the big activity with the MSTS Activity Editor and run the activity checking on Open Rails. Why? OR has an Autopilot Mode allowing easy activity checking.

There is nothing wrong with the MSTS Activity Editor although some folks have a hard time with it.
Not I as it's always performed well for me . . . It was the MSTS Sim that royally screwed up activity running with all the knots you had to jump through to get it to run correctly.
Not so Open Rails . . .During the run from NY Penn Station to Washington I pass or meet about 40 AI trains both passenger and freight and every meet/pass occurs at exactly the same time and location!
The MSTS Sim was NEVER able to achieve this level of accuracy . . .never!

So yes, there is a new activity editor being developed by Goku (also the new Route Editor) but I have not used it . . . yet. I'm pretty busy editing the PRR route and can't take the time to start writing activities until finish the PRR edit at Philadelphia.

    Regards,
Apologies for barging in, sort of off topic..
I'm still using the MSTS AE, cannot get used to the 3D route type display of Goku's TSRE-AE.
I much prefer to schematic representation used by the MSTS-AE.
I would love a schematic representation choice in Goku's, added to the functions the program already has.
Plus, added to the schematic would be any roads or other crossings over the tracks. Where buildings, silos, warehouses, etc are for the sidings.
I wish he would add a choice to decouple the AE from the RE.
I'm fully aware this is an outlier opinion.

As soon as this tdb / yellow lines and crashing tile gets resolved I'll get back to work.
Goku asked for the route files and I uploaded then to him.
