    Default Pacific Parlours, no more

It seems, unfortunately a few days ago, Amtrak rather quietly has retired it's Pacific Parlour cars, permanently. Supposedly from what I was able to gather, the Parlour services will be provided from here-on-out by a 2nd Sightseer Lounge car with tables for the dining.. Sounds like a DOWNGrade if you ask me.

Saw the Amtrak notice on that a few weeks ago. It's too bad, but the cars are very old and almost certainly need maintenance that Amtrak's not willing to give them. Hopefully they'll be made available to somebody who is willing to give them a little TLC rather than just scrapping them.

The cars are old ATSF cars from the 1950s, and since being folded into Amtrak, their maintenance has been to keep 'em rolling with spit and chewing gum. They would need a complete rebuild/restoration to keep them in service, which is an expense Amtrak can't afford.

You can't beat progress (and the $) but that's a real shame. It looks like they'd have been a real experience to ride.
