    Predominant power as far as cultural is concerned is now the USA.

    In all english speaking countries, Bruce. As you rightly say, instant communication, internet and cheap global travel.

    Have given us all a language dominated by americanisms.

    I still prefer a*se to bum though. But i am working class and uncouth.

    That's okay, Mike. The 'a' word is perfectly acceptable and knows no class boundaries!

    It's interesting (for those like me who are curious about the English language) in that the term "butt" comes from "buttocks" - obviously - and the term "bum" is a contraction of "bottom".
    "Arse" comes from Old German, apparently. It means "tail". Nothing rude about it.
