Default MSTS install from a USB?

    Hi

I have a new Laptop that does not have a CD/DVD drive and I would rather not
buy a USB attached CD/DVD drive just to install MSTS.

Is there some way to make the install program on the install disks
    work from a USB.

    Any advice or help appreciated.

    regards

    Daniel

    Hi Daniel,
There is a way, but you need somebody, who has a CD/DVD drive, to copy the contents of both your CDs into one folder on a flash drive.

I haven't tested the above, but can't see any reason why it shouldn't work!

    Hi Ged

it worked perfectly, my first attempt failed, I copied the files from the first
disk onto the USB then the second overwriting the .TMP file and I got a "Cannot read dll" error,
so I tried copying the second disk to the USB first then copied the first disk to the USB
and overwriting that .TMP file. It ran a normal install.

Thanks for your help, it is always appreciated.

    Regards

    Hi Daniel,
    I'm glad you've done it

I've just proved the theory myself - twice!! The only difference between yours and mine is that it didn't matter whether I used the .tmp file from CD1 or CD2. I think your problem was just caused by a reading error by the drive.

For anyone else wishing to do the same, you may have problems copying from CD2. If the copying time indicates more than 5 hours, eject the CD and cancel the copying, then re-insert CD2 and restart the copying. Allow all overwrites/folder merges.

When the copying is completed, I recommend running setup.exe as administrator. The installation time will be much shorter than installing from CDs!

Before running MSTS, apply the v1.4 update (at the bottom of this page : http://msts.steam4me.net/MSTS_Updates/index.html), otherwise MSTS will be looking for a non-existent CD!! Also, don't forget the rename or delete startup.mpg (in the GLOBAL folder).

    Cheers,
    Ged

    Hi Ged

I think this may become a common requirement, when I bought this Laptop
I did not even check that it had a DVD drive, of course it did???

But too late I had no reason to return it and either way none of the SSD HDD
Laptops with reasonable weight have a DVD Drive.

Perhaps a short tutorial posted on the MSTS and ORTS forum would be a good thing.

I am sure you would do a much better job than I, or anyone else, would do.

BTW, regarding the 2nd CD issue I have found that if there is a problem, and there
always is, I take the CD and give it a good soapy wash in warm water and then rinse
it in warm water and give it a good dry with a soft hand towel and it then works.

Alchemy I know but it has worked for me a few times.

My next project is making Gold from Lead... :-)

    Cheers and thanks again
