Default What do Terminal Railroads do?

What does the Terminal Railroad Association of St. Louis and Other terminal railroads do just shunt and sort cars from other roads?

Terminal railroads were created in the last century at the major rail hubs across the US - St. Louis, Chicago, etc. They provided railroad neutral switching and exchange services. Most were jointly owned by many railroads. Terminal Railroad Association of St. Louis details follow.

In 1889, TRRA was created for the purpose of securing an efficient method of interchange of passenger and freight traffic over the Mississippi River. The original railroads making up the TRRA were Missouri Pacific Railway Company, the St. Louis, Iron Mountain and Southern Railway Company, Wabash Railroad Company, the Ohio and Mississippi Railway Company, the Louisville and Nashville Railroad Company, and the Cleveland, Cincinnati, Chicago and St. Louis Railway Company. Numerous other railroads were subsequently admitted to the Association.

Through mergers the owners are now: UP, BNSF, CSX, CN and NS

There was (is?) a terminal railroad in Kansas City centered at the bottoms where the stockyards were as well as the shared Passenger terminal ... and another in Oakland California that served the Port of Oakland.

B&O owned the B&O Chicago Terminal RR. It was founded in 1910. It still exists and has a web site: http://www.boctrr.com/
