Default Steam train in Galaxy Express and Galaxy Railways.

I recognize the 999 from Galaxy Express. What kind of engine is it I think it may be the same as Hiro in Thomas and friends. What are those side panels they put on the bigboy for? It looks weird with them.

Not sure about the first question. The side panels are most likely smoke deflectors. Some of the challengers had them fitted when they burned oil. Bigboy 4019 had smoke deflectors fitted for testing but the test was inconclusive.

What is the point of smoke deflectors the smoke comes out of the top and doesn't go along the sides?

Coal smoke contains fly ash that eventually comes raining back down to the ground. You want the exhaust to be blasted high enough so that it doesn't come down into the cab or the coaches. The smoke deflectors intercept the air that is displaced by the front of the locomotive and directs it up toward the stack.

The Galaxy Express is based on a JNR C62 class 4-6-4.

Micro Ace did an N scale version back in 2009.

Hiro by the way is supposed to be a D51 class 2-8-2, in particular one of the locos used on Sakhalin Island which became Soviet territory after WW2.

A C62 class 4-6-4. There are five of those still around. Is there one for MSTS?
