    Default ORTS Standard Engine Files

    I'm getting ready to upload 163 Open Rails standard engine files...the set should have something for everyone. These are beta versions, actually this is the 5th or 6th revision of these files. Those of you who have downloaded the OR Conversion Kits will be familiar with the Standard engine files found in the locomotive folder of the Common.inc folder. These new ones have been completely reworked for accuracy, internal file consistency, making sure the starting tractive effort is a function of the mass of the locomotive and, hopefully, more accurate continuous tractive effort numbers. I've been using some of Bob Boudoins physics, and physics from manuals and other sources I find accurate.

    The files all contain custom made ORTS Max Tractive curves, ORTS Diesel Engine Blocks, and where appropriate ORTS Curtius Kniffler adhesion numbers to be used in the wag portion of the engine file.

    Nice work - sir - thanks... Quite the body of work...

    I've been staring at ORTS steam physics files for so long - these look all Greek to me...

    First gen is typically about as new as I go - I'll have to try them out on some of the L&N RS3's on the Cumberland which I haven't run in a while...

    A huge thanks. This is a tremendous step in moving the Open Rails community to a common set of diesel physics. This is fundamental for consistent activities, timetables and a lot of other things.

    Thanks so much for this. I missed this thread before releasing the PRR East. Doggone! The E7 seemed to me at the time that the physics that could be better but I missed the opportunity to fix.
    I did try to improve the smoke and was almost successful. The result was better that the pile-of-burning-tires smoke that it emitted at any power setting but still may need improvement.

    Do you have any suggestions for the K4 Pacifics? They seem a bit anemic pulling the grade and I seem to remember they ran quite well in MSTS but using that for comparison is not to be trusted.

    The Steam Physics model has been GREATLY simplified for ORTS - most of your MSTS ENG file can be pruned away and discarded...

    Here are the only values that I suspect deal directly with "Tractive Effort" in ORTS...

    I can also send you my ENG file from a project steam locomotive - that has been setup strictly for ORTS with only the needed parameters as a model...

    Is this the PRR K4 steam locomotive?

    If so I would be interested in assisting you to work through the ENG file and build a file based upon a reasonable set of physics.
