A matched A-B-A set of EMD F7s wearing the popular 'Black Widow' paint scheme lead an eastbound Southern Pacific freight (heavy with reefers and other high-priority traffic) thru Truckee, CA in these mid-1950s views.

    Hi Folks,

Can you rephrase your question - it doesn’t make sense ?

Beautiful set of shots - looks like the shape lighting is set a little different in a couple of the cars... Gotta love the old Donner...

As far as I understand, these old American reefers uses only ice like a thermos? Does it work in North America reefers with electric chillers?

I'm trying to compare North American and ex-USSR railways. Some perishable goods loads to reefers which cools by ice, also uses "refrigerator units" - 4 cars for goods and one service car - inside this car diesel-generaor, electric refrigerator and sleeping room for mechanics which go with this refrigerator unit. Their task - check the work of diesel engine and refrigerator machines. If for if for cooling uses only ice, then the mechanics are not needed, or in the USA for check of cargo condition someone escorts reefer trains?

P.S. - I found photos of Soviet refrigerator mechanics: https://parovoz.com/newgallery/pg_vi...LNG=RU#picture https://parovoz.com/newgallery/pg_vi...LNG=RU#picture And two mechanics with people of Uzbekistan: https://parovoz.com/newgallery/pg_vi...LNG=RU#picture This is a great job - you can ride around the all country!

    Hi...

Thanks - yeah - I’m pretty sure the era pictured are all “ice” reefers - I’m not exactly sure when mechanical refrigeration took over but I’d guess sometime in the 50’s... They did have fans to blow air over the ice and circulate it... They would stop periodically to refresh the ice along the way - as needed... It probably took some real effort to keep produce cold back then...
