Thread: Ditchlight Reflection Question

    Default Ditchlight Reflection Question

    Hello all,

If it’s already been a thread my apologies, I haven’t located it.

Trying to figure out how to code the lighting within an engine file to properly reflect alternating ditchlights on the ground ahead of a locomotive.

    Thanks!

    Hi...

I don't think you can in either MSTS/ORST - as we're still limited to only a single solitary "cone" of light (the cone provides actual illumination)... You can have alternating ditch lights - but they're not going to "illuminate" anything...

You can do this by animating the single cone of light to move back and forth in the light states - my Genesis engines do this. Give me a bit to jump on my desktop and I'll paste the light definition here for you.

This light definition moves a cone of light back and forth on the ground that simulates flashing ditch lights. These are configured to come on in the "high" light state, although I'm sure you know what numbers to fiddle with to change the operation.

Another thing I discovered - if you use Open Rails - set "Increase Headlight" and "Horn" to the same button, the spacebar. Then have "Decrease headlight" be a different button. Also, configure your flashing ditchlights to come on with the "bright" setting. This way, when you blow the horn, the ditch lights will automatically turn on. When you're done, decrease the headlight back to "dim" for your normal light pattern.

On my engines, my three light states are as follows:

OFF - What would normally be dim (just main headlight, no ditch lights)
DIM - What would normally be bright (headlight and ditch lights)
BRIGHT - (headlight on, ditch lights flashing)

That kind of mapping gives you pretty prototypical results.

    Hello people !!

by the method taught by Strawberry Yogurt Strawberry, it didn't work. Is there already an open rails update for the swinging ditch ligts to work?

We have always had headlights and alternating ditch lights in both MSTS and ORTS . You change the states of the cone as was shown above .

Here is a sample of one that I use on a 44 tonner .

I tried friend Strawberry's model, it didn't work out.

I tried other models and it didn't work out.

Could you show a video where we can see this light activity at work?

    a hug .
