    Default User account security

Well, it is official, in just 2.5 weeks this site has added 1,010 new users. Too bad only 3 of them were people actually interested in train sims. I'm pretty sure new user 'Cake Delivery In Jaipur' is not interested in train sims.

On 8/20 the user account total was 200,900 and today, 2.5 weeks later, it sits at 201,910

I suggest people take a look at their profile pages and rethink the level of personally identifiable material or any personal website links that are visible there. The number of page views to most user's profile pages here are skyrocketing, so who knows what man or machine is harvesting what info. Many people who still are active in the forums now have profile page views well into the 5 figures, something that was unheard of back when this site was for sims-only users.

70% of the new users are scammers... I have been checking them daily, blocking most of them out, since they have web pages as their signature addresses that links to porn/smug sites, Indian spamware sites and many you can choose or list.. I just dont get why this forum has not have a tool or utilities that can ban off or that can use an Capatcha program to ward off spam bots and so on.. it just gets worst by the days end.

What is Nels doing about it, as the owner/operator of the site? Does Flightsim dot com have the same issues?

Ok, Calm down.... As you should have noticed, any forum posts from new members
are moderated until they have a total of 5 posts that did not require moderation.
Only moderators and admins see those posts. Any SPAM users are promptly banned
permanently. They can create new accounts, but they are moderated and banned.

As to profile info, you should consider any information there to be public to anyone
viewing the site. You should be careful of what you put there.

    Regards,
    Rick

Create new accounts over and over again? How about simply blacklist the IP address so they wont have to keep recreating new accounts? There is a way to do that..

I'm a moderator on another forum that gets persistent spammers from time to time. Blocking an IP address is a simple thing to do, but spammers are able to bounce around to other IP addresses and create new user names as fast as we can nuke them (a one-button ban and clean for mods and admins). We also use moderated threads for new members, plus they cannot post website addresses nor any attachment until a certain number of posts have been attained. We also have sleepers who wait out a trial period and do the two word posts to get to the magic level. Not quite an art form, but some get a checkmark for effort.

Other than you're Welsh and are therefore good at mining coal and close-harmony singing, there is nothing else, Mike.
