Track noise can be included as part of the locomotive's sms or as a sound region of the route itself.
Pretty easy to tell whether the sound follows the train or stays in place after the train is gone.

The clickety clack rail joint sound is part of the track sound system. The sms files used are defined in the trk file. The sms will show which wav files are called. The frequency ( distance between joints ) of the rail joint sound can be adjusted in the sms file/s.

I meant to say where does this track sound come from as this clearly isn't the default track sound
There are many different styles of track sounds, but they are all defined in the route trk file. As to which one that was, hard to tell above the noise of the horn and prime mover.

I'm pretty sure track sounds are found in the route's ttype.dat file
Exactly. ttype file defines the sms files you can select for track sounds. Placement by the route editor is straightforward. You set a start and an end point for the sound region. When the train passes over the area, the sound plays per the sms file.

Thank you for correcting my error chaps, got a stinking cold and brain clogged up a bit. Whilst it is correct that you define sound regions with start and end points, this does not apply to the default sound. This is played where no other sound is defined , and is the track sound most heard on any route. The actual sound heard will depend on which sms from which track sound set is being used. The time period of the sound can be changed in the sms file. short time gaps for jointed rail and much longer ones for welded rail.

you can hear the tracksound more clearly at 0:15 of this video
As said above, that is the base track sound that is heard on all routes. The style will depend on which sound set is used. That in the video is the MSTS default USATrack0Ex.sms. The sounds played are defined within the sms file. The sms and associated wav files are located in the main Sound folder.
