    I have already increased the volume of wav files to just before clipping/distortion occurs. But despite doing this, all of the train simulators continued to play the wav files substantially quieter than that played directly in audio players and editors.

    The solution to get the wav files to play louder within train simulators is to increase the "VolumeCurve" values (when necessary) within corresponding sms files to greater than 1.0. I've had this value up to 2.0 to provide a much louder wav file playback within the train simulators.
