These engines have been out for months and really years for the CP SWs, the new ones were all created from the old ones. Never hears of anyone until today having sound problems with them.

Paul you misunderstood my post completely.

THIS is how I install New Routes.

    1) I keep a tested "error free" version of the Default MSTS install. I say "Default" but I then add to that all the "usual" requirements of subsequent routes from the last 19 years. Stuff like New Roads, Track enhancements, BIN etc.etc.

    2) I test this with RR and Conbuilder (payware version) to make sure I starting with a clean canvas.

    3) I download a new route to a fresh folder in my Downloads/Routes files.

    4) I copy that Route into the Default Install following any specific instructions in the Read Me.

    5) I retest with RR and Conbuilder (some folk include some specific stock with the route)

That gives me another Error free platform so that I'll know that any subsequent Errors will be to do with the last thing I installed.

    SO.........

I then set about downloading all the Required Stock.

I noted that it was ALL of your own creation? Folk have been downloading your stuff for years right?

Normally with a download list of models from different sources I'd re-test after EACH new model is installed. I figured that as it was all your stuff I'd merely unzip it all to a folder outside of the Sim to see if there was anything obviously different about any of the individual models.

I then copied the stock into the Trains/Trainset folder.

BELT AND BRACES.... I re-ran Conbuilder and was surprised and puzzled to find loads of errors.

NOW we all know that quite often one fix will wipe out loads of errors and Conbuilder often suggests exactly where the problem lies?

I double checked Consist errors in Route Riter which showed a list of missing stuff.

NOW this all took time. Whilst I was doing that you had posted about consists that should have been removed. As I was concentrating on my problems I didn't see that until I posted a list (I thought helpfully?!) of stuff my efforts had thrown up.

I removed the stock and consists that you'd posted and obviously the error list was considerably reduced.

However I've persisted and removed just about ALL the errors my set up was reporting EXCEPT that Conbuilder keeps giving me nearly 700 SOUND errors all to do with the SW's

    NOW LETS BE CLEAR HERE...

My first reaction was NOT that anyone OTHER THAN ME had screwed up here.

Even worse I didn't understand why Conbuilder was reporting missing stuff that as far as I could see was there all along?????

I have to say that personally I'M WITH YOU The idea of Common Sound and Common Cabs was introduced early on as a way to reduce file sizes and save disc space when the same sound or cab was used by MOST of the stock THEN available on the far lower spec machines of that era. In fact MOST early add-ons used default sound and cabs whatever they were.

Since then there are hundreds of new models, loads of custom built cabs, custom sounds etc. AND disc space is (for many of us) no longer an issue.

I've have loads of issues trying to alias sounds and cabs in the past. Obviously I've not mastered the skills required to fix the issues (and judging by the forums I'm not alone) so when I find a model with Sound and Cab files included I'm delighted.

Now all I did was download, unzip and place in the route the required SW models NO MORE NO LESS.

So when I got sound errors reported I couldn't for the life of me understand why? There were a couple of .wavs reported missing but these were in other stuff so I merely copied those into the SW sounds.

Conbuilder retest removed those errors but left a load more.

SO... When I asked for help I figured "well anyone else who did what I did and ran a test in Conbuilder would SURELY (?) get the same error message and have found the fix?"

The only reason I asked about Common Snd was that many of you will be familiar with Conbuilder Sound Reports that contain the phrase "....if these are aliased they are missing in the Common Snd folder....."

I guess if no one else has the problem all I can do is remove ALL the SW models, redownload them and install them again. That way I can test that the errors are genuinely caused by those installs AND work through them one by one.

OK, have a look at the folder for the SWs. Open and and I would think you'll find a second folder with the same name, You need to do this with every thing I post, other people's files too. My version of Winzip has always done thing, put the folder insode the folder.

As far as getting 700 sound errors while running the route through R-R, very strange. The day I packaged the route I ran it through R-R and a Route Check turned up 8 sound errors. These come up every time you edit a route, R-R doesn't like the location you put a sound source, lest them as errors and moves them to the center of the tile they are on. You hit OK, then close R-R, the run another check and you get no errors, compact the route, and delete the raw terrain tiles.

Before downloading again, check and make sure you don't have a folder inside the outer folder.

Paul I hardly dared mention the folder within a folder!!! THAT was what I found in most of the stock and assumed that I'd somehow scewed up unzipping them.

Once I removed the inner folder and pasted those in the Trainset Folder (deleting the "outer folder" afterwards) It cleared a mass of errors AND of course 90+% of the consist errors were solved.

THE ONLY THING I can't understand is how other folk haven't had the same problem? Is the zip issue to do with Operating Systems or is it the same for Xp, Vista, Win7 and Win10? Maybe others looked into each folder and spotted the duplication before copying the files and as I recall it was not ALL the zips this happened with?

BTW the errors are in Conbuilder NOT RR.

I'm determined to get the route and stock error free because I've other stock I'd like to use on it and the one thing I have learned is NEVER add new stuff to a route with existing (even if they are only "reported") errors. Life as a technician teaches you to make sure that one problem is fixed before you try and fix the next one. Sometimes ONE fix cures several problems?

    I'll report back.

No, this is standerd operating proceedure for anything that's been zipped with Winzip. One of the first files I downloaded 20 years ago had the same issue and for the last 20 years I've checked every file I've unzipped just to make sure it didn't have a folder inside a folder. Every file I've zipped and uploaded has this. I guess if you've ever downloaded one of my files over the years you know to look for this.

I don't use Conbuilder so I'm not familiar with how it works. Maybe you can have a look at it again once you have gone through my rolling stock and checked for folders inside folders, maybe those errors will go away too.

Right one thing I did realise, DON't ask how, is that I ended up with two folders for the CPSW1200rs's. One called CP_SWu_pk (the correct one?) and another that seemed to have the same files in called CPSW10pk .

I removed the latter and it Halved the sound errors.

NOW you have to understand that as Conbuilder reports EVERY reference to a missing file as a SEPARATE error you can end up with dozens of errors that are in fact solved by adding a single file.

SO we.... LOL I'm getting somewhere.

Now the first issue seems to be with the SW1200eng.sms. Which, RIGHT at the bottom refers to some SW1200engineAI.wav file. There's a read me in the SOUND folder that says when you unzip the file there will be an AI wav that needs to be placed somewhere else. Well that ain't there?

There seems to be a similar issue with a missing AlcoAI.wav for the RSC-24's sound too.

So in the interest of self help I searched the library for SW1200 to see if any had a suitable sound? WOW was that a shock?! Not a big fan of switchers so I was amazed at how many SW1200's there are in the library and EVEN MORE surprised at how many different sound packs these contained!!! Obviously I don't need to complicate matters by adding files that you never used so I'd draw your attention to the read me within the sound folder.

Here's what the Con builder report shows. Not being a sound man I don't understand the significance of some of this.

BTW I redownloaded the CN SW1200s to make sure the zip wasn't corrupted in my original download.

    Hi Geoff,
For starters, you can copy the SW1200engineAI.wav out of the CP_SWu-pk/SOUND folder .

Unfortunately, I've not been able to locate the
AlcoengineAI.wav file, but I'm sure somebody will soon find a copy!

    Cheers,
    Ged

Here's the problem this created. All the v3 activities are looking for the set of CP SWs that were in the CP_SWu_pk, and only that folder. You can just rename they CPSW10pk, you probably could have just opened the folder and again found a foldr inside with the same name. Although the units inside have the same name (plus a v2 added) the End files have been modified to show less smoke, new brakes, and a much better cabview.

Again, look in the RSC-24 folder for a folder inside with the same name.

The RSC-24s were never used as AI traffic, both MSTS and OR ran just fine without the AI file.

Thanks Ged, found that and that's one down.

In view of Pauls comment on the RSC-24 I also copied it to the sound folder there and renamed it as the missing AlcoengineAI too. If nothing else it will stop the Error report?

NEXT it would seem that the CP_SWu_pk SOUND folder contains two SW1200*.sms files that point o the CN SW1200 SOUND folder?

    1) This shows up as an error in CB

    2) the sound folder in the CP SW1200's contains 49 files and the one in the CN SW1200 folder contains only 34 file of which two are CN_1290wag.sms and CN_1290eng.sms.

I'm not good at sound but surely the CP loco's should point at their own SOUND folder? If we can sort that one out it'll remove hundreds of reported errors.

    Cheers

Geoff I think you are taking this stuff way too serious! Every sound folder for every diesel and steam locomotive contains two SMS files, one called cab, the other is called eng. One is for outside and the other is for inside, it's not an error.

I'm in the Sound folder for the CN SWs, there is no file called CN_1290wag.sms and no file called CN_1290eng.sms unless you've renamed files again. A wag file is for a piece of rolling stock, and eng is for an engine. Rolling stock files normally have a sms file for genericfreight, or passenger cars, they both reside in the SOUND folder inside the Train Simulator folder and very rarely in the folder of a piece of rolling stock.

My SWs work fine out of the zip, you need to stop tinkering with things. You can spend the next month tinkering and getting errors or you can spend the next month running train and enjoying yourself... your choice.
