The last unit - SP SD40M-2 8579

[SD40-2]

Well, this is the last unit to complete the Cascades Crossing locomotive package, and now that I have the data I need on it, it's time to build the thing.

This is one of the more complex units, being bashed from a SD45 and a GP40. It's part of the reason I put it off for quite some time.

Still very much a work in progress. Some parts by Nat Flores and Erick Cantu.

Some major updates, I'll post a pic tomorrow.

• Ended up rebuilding the rear hood section a few times to improve mapping.
• Repositioned the brakewheel slot to better fit the SD40M-2.
• Cleaned up the front so I can use the existing MU stands, and started making the ditchlights for the front of the unit.
• Replaced the cab roof to take care of the stray horn, and allow me to install the Antenna planes later.
• I'm redoing the long hood texture. MK used a door arrangement very different from the stock SD45s and the GP40s radiator section, so I can't just redraw the SD45s hood doors onto it.

Yes, I know, I've been trying to figure out how to fix those for a while. I've never been flush with cash, and I do want this stuff to be not so dependent on payware, so I'm stuck using square wheels for now.

No, I totally get it. The only hobby thing I do where I could make extra cash is my fonts... but I decided in 2002 that I would not sell them... so I don't. And A LOT of the repaints lately are payware driven... which means... no.... I don't have them either.

I sort of wish MSTS was more like TRAINZ... where you can actually replace Trucks/Bogies independent of the main model.

There have been some locomotives made over the years that consist of a FA just riding on some trucks. But yes, I really do wish I could hot-swap trucks like I can in Trainz.

The wheels will hopefully be less noticeable once I darken them and reduce the saturation.

Well, I decided to work on this unit a bit more today while I await some other things to pan out. The long hood was poorly mapped, so that got booted for the moment. I'll try again latter.

Ditchlights are blue because I took them from the GP39-2, and modded them a bit.

I also made some faux Roller bearing trucks. Look pretty good, but some adjustments may be required.
