    Default Unblock Files

    Hi

since W Vista I have been unblocking downloaded files, is it necessary to do this?

I have tried both ways recently and cannot see any difference but perhaps I am
    missing something.

    Any ideas on this.

    Cheers

Sounds like something to do with your AV?

When you unblock and expand a ZIP archive the expanded files retain their dates. If the ZIP archive is not unblocked the dates of the files are changed to today. This is using the built-in ZIP expansion of Windows.

    Hi Derek

I don't think that is the case here.

It has happened since Vista with Defender, AVG, Kaspersky and PCMatic Supershield.

I right click on a downloaded file select properties and the is a small square with Unblock bedside it.

I select Unblock and it goes away.

    Cheers

That is the Microsoft nanny at work.

I dont use the ZIP expansion of Windows

Not only Zip files have this issue. Even PDF files downloaded from my scanner have it.

    Hi Daniel,
Baldwin has already given you the reason!
We all get it on different file types - when you've downloaded a file, check its Properties and click the 'Unblock' box, if required. Simples!!

    Hi Ged

it happens with every file I download, even music, "Simples" is a good description but
unless I know the ramifications how can I decide?

    Cheers

    Hi Daniel,
    There are no ramifications!!
If you want your system to have access to the file, you need to unblock it!

Observation: I have 2 PCs with OS WIn 10. Desktop has Win 10 Pro. Surface Tablet has Win 10 Home.
Both PCs have My Onedrive account so Files in OneDrive folders are accessible on BOTH PCs.

ZIP and PDF files that I have downloaded from the iNet show the same note as Daniel's graphic about needing to be unlocked when I view the properties of the file on the Surface Tablet, BUT when I look at the properties of the same files on my desktop I DO NOT see the Blocked Note. In fact I have yet to find a ZIP file in my Downloads folder on my Desktop that has the Blocked note. Where as I have numerous ones on the Surface.

So Daniel which Win 10 OS are you using? Home or Pro?

BTW I have never "Unblocked" a file on my Surface and have no problem accessing the files whether a downloaded PDF or a file from a downloaded, unzipped ZIP file.
