Route - Ferrocarril Chihuahua al Pacífico (Chepe)

The Ferrocarril Chihuahua al Pacífico (Chihuahua-Pacific Railway), also known as El Chepe from its reporting mark CHP, is a major rail line in northwest Mexico, linking Chihuahua City, to Los Mochis and its port, Topolobampo. It crosses the Sierra Madre Occidental, part of the range that in the United States is called the Rocky Mountains.

It runs 673 km (418 mi), traversing the Copper Canyon, a rugged series of canyons that have led some to call this the most scenic railroad trip on the continent. It is both an important transportation system for locals and a draw for tourists.

The tracks pass over 37 bridges and through 86 tunnels, rising as high as 2,400 m (7,900 ft) above sea level near Divisadero (the continental divide), a popular lookout spot over the canyons.

Each one-way trip takes roughly 16 hours. The track also crosses over itself to gain elevation.

Placing the track as the first step of this project... Completed 200kms of 693kms (going North from Los Mochis to Chihuahua)....

Thanks a lot, this route is very complex I am progressing very slow trying to place the required track profile to achieve the right altitude.... I will share the progress....

Several kms later I will find the "El Lazo" a full loop ascending in the direction that I am going (north)

Back in the 1970's when I was stationed in New Mexico I had planned to ride this railroad. Then I met this girl and my railfanning was sidetracked for a while. Things didn't work out with her, so now I regret that I didn't go for the train trip while I had the chance, Oh well.

I did get to ride the El Paso trolley into Ciudad Juarez though so technically I have ridden the rails in Mexico

Hello, thanks for sharing, so bad you didn't have chance to do this trip... But there is still a service train running...
I traveled the full route (Los Mochis to Chihuahua) in 2016 as first time and it was totally impressive, the way that the route was built to cross the "Sierra Madre" is amazing...
Now the train only runs from Los Mochis to Creel (and backwards) in a recently and renovated luxury train (Chepe express)...
