Awful lot of work for a 20 year old piece of software that's been superseded by better, free, software.
    Oh well.
    And the music sucks.

Actually, it's almost impossible to buy the authentic MSTS CDs here in India, so most MSTS players here have to pirate it just to get access to the default routes/rolling stock.

Even though we all play Open Rails, there's no denying the fact that so many routes require an MSTS installation and the default routes are always a must-have.

At this point, I don't think the morality of pirating 20 year old abandonware can even be questioned. That's just my two cents.

    Very good, Bruce

That, I think, is the thin end of a very big wedge - piracy should never be accepted.

And, MSTS is not essential, there are a couple of sites t where you are shown how to run OR without MSTS,
of course you have to swap out default rolling stock and Consists if the route you install has MSTS content.

"a "stand-alone" Open Rails installation and can be set up to run independently of MSTS"

    Hi Daniel,
Of course, you are quite correct, but, as you say, to use many of the routes and stock currently available for MSTS/ORTS you need some files from a default MSTS installation. Many users, especially newcomers, don't have sufficient knowledge to determine what to replace and with what. This particularly applies to routes which use an installme.bat file!

    Cheers,
    Ged

Of course, unless that's the one and only way to obtain those default routes. There is simply nobody selling MSTS anywhere, on any platform these days. To be honest, if there was a way to pay microsoft for this (there isn't) I'm sure most of us would have done so. It's easy to take the moral high ground when you have access to sellers that allow you to still purchase MSTS. Here, a search for MSTS on EBay.in has nothing but crickets.

True, but most routes in the file library here require the default routes to run. Those bare minimum OR-sans-MSTS setups don't allow the installation of other freeware routes that require those files, especially pre-2014 routes.

That would be 'Paise,' which is what a Rupee is divided into. A+ for effort though!
