Thread: Routes to run steam.

    Default Routes to run steam.

G'day all, I am looking for some good routes to run steam on, preferably steam by design but other suitable routes could be OK as well.
    Regards

    Hi Barrie,

3DTS - payware - WP Feather River with all of Derek’s masterpiece steam locomotives available at Elvas.

Rick’s monumental Monon. Dowload from his own site - it’s truly a wonder of the Train Sim world - covers most of the state of Illinois.

    Rich’s 1940’s LHR.

    Paul’s B&M CT River

Are the ones I normally run and I use steam 90% of the time. The LHR and B&M are project routes for me that I’ve been tinkering with for years. I’m pretty Northeast US focused for my train sim time.

    Regards,
    Scott

    Hi Barrie,

Sorry - Monon is in Indiana - I keep thinking Illinois because the route starts in downtown Chicago. Rick's representation of the city and the transitions to the suburbs and rural areas respectively - is a sight to behold.

    Scott

G'day Scott, thank you once again. I have a list of routes that I think will fit the bill:-
    B&M White Mountains Division
    B&M WN&P Division
    B&M's Northern Division
    B&M's Western Division V3
    Bear Mountain Pass V5.0
    Black Cannon NARROW GAUGE Line
    Canadian Pacific MacTier Subdivision
    Conn River Route
    Cooper River & Northwestern Railway
    FEATHER RIVER
Monon Route Middle And Southern Div
    Monon-2 Route V15
    MONON-2 Version 17 - Needs fixing track
    Strasburg Railroad
    Strasburg Railroad 1970

    also have-
    3DTS_DONNER1
    3DTS_TEH2
    BNSF_Scenic V1
    BNSF_ScenicV2
    BNSF_Seligman2
    Willamette Pass
The B&M routes are steam routes as is. I will go slow and steady keeping things as error free as possible and may convert some of the inbuilt routes mainly the US and possibly the European ones, something to fill in the day.
    Regards
    Barrie

3DTS_DONNER1, 3DTS_TEH2, and Willamette Pass would make good SP Steam era routes. Donner is set in the 1950s, and Tehachapi and Willamette hadn't changed all that much between steam and the 1990s diesel era, if you're willing to ignore the cars of course. (3DTS even made a steam-era addon for Tehachapi.)

All the BNSF routes are out. The Scenic Sub was partially electrified during the steam era to deal with the Cascade Tunnel, and BNSF totally overhauled the Seligman Sub's signals after the merger.

The ATSF Seligman Sub would work better for the steam era.

The 1940s LHR would be a good one.

I would think any of the Milwaukee Road routes would be suitable for steam also.

Outside of the US, the Australian routes at the Coals to Newcastle site are of the steam era. I particularly like the Illawara route although I had to make my own activities, which can be found in the file library.
