As MSTS is an outdated game it's not surprising it does not work.

    Have you tried Open Rails?

    Cheers!

On the The Statue of Liberty in New York Harbor there is a Tablet. On it is written:
"Give me your tired, your poor, your huddled masses yearning to breathe free,
the wretched refuse of your teeming shore, send these, the homeless, tempest-tossed to me,
I lift my lamp beside the golden door!"

Make sure to install MSTS according to the instructions found at Steam4me. Do not deviate from those instructions.
    See also this thread: https://www.trainsim.com/vbts/showth...-or-64-bits-OS

Also, go to Trainsimulations and download their Starter Route: https://www.trainsimulations.net/starter
That will give you an installation the new (newer than MSTS) Open Rails simulator. If all goes well you may find that Open Rails can run all your MSTS stuff!

DX7, which is required for MSTS is not supported in virtualbox.

I can have multiple versions of directx installed, so I will install version 7 without using virutalbox.

    Hi

"I can have multiple versions of directx installed, so I will install version 7 without using virutalbox"

I would love to know how you do that, using software outside of VB.

I use VB to run some outdated software.

I have not tried MSTS but I'm sure it would work using the steam4me instructions.

Just make sure you have enough HDD space allocated.

    Cheers

    from https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/VirtualBox

    • 3D graphics acceleration for Windows guests earlier than Windows 7 [40] was removed in version 6.1.[41] This affected Windows XP [42] and Windows Vista.

I would suggest this may be a problem.
We won't know unless you are willing to test it.
There are not many people with XP still running msts/or.
    Cheers
