Default BLW/ZT Troop Train Bonus - for Veterans Day

    Hi All,

The annual BLW/ZT Troop Train Bonus (12th year), has again been the results of an inspiration by Chris Parker. The photo below was from a LIFE magazine I believe either just before or during WWII. The car in question looked strangely familiar....

Years back I had created a Stillwell coach for a planned ERIE/DL&W set, but never released it. This was clearly a Stillwell, but the center door was the real kicker. United States Maritime Commission #161 was originally New York Westchester & Boston electric MU #161.

    From Wikipedia:

"The New York, Westchester and Boston Railway Company (NYW&B, also known to its riders as "the Westchester" and colloquially as the "Boston-Westchester"), was an electric commuter railroad in the Bronx and Westchester County, New York from 1912 to 1937. It ran from the southernmost part of the South Bronx, near the Harlem River, to Mount Vernon with branches north to White Plains and east to Port Chester. From 1906, construction and operation was under the control of the New York, New Haven & Hartford Railroad (NH) until its bankruptcy in 1935."

After bankruptcy, 50 of the NYW&B cars were sent by owner NYNH&H to Readville, MA where all electrical gear was removed and the center door was replaced with a window set and additional coach seats were added, effectively turning the MU into what externally looked like a traditional Erie Stillwell coach. They ran in Boston commuter service until the late 40's.

For this bonus, I plan to recreate US Maritime Commission #161 (keeping with the veterans day theme), and also include Erie and NYNH&H versions as well.

Maybe someday, I throw a pantograph on it for turn of the last century juice fans!

    Stay tuned!

    Rick

Part of the NYW&B still lives on as the NYC subway IRT Dyre Avenue line down to 180th St. Now used by the #5 train.

Wasn't somebody actually building the NYW&B route?

Yes sir and that person is me. Just haven't made any recent updates. Guess it's time to get on the ball.

Haven't forgotten. My original Stillwell cars needed a significant upgrade!

Here's the US Maritime Commission version

    New Haven version (unlettered)

Hope to finish before the new year!
