Route Riter Not Running Properly

Wouldn't it be nice if we could actually use Route Riter without the MSTS installment??

Had to ditch RR and use Polymaster instead when it came to editing unicode files such as .s files. However, would come in handy to have Route Riter, for you know.. packaging routes, replacing files in consists, etc..

My utility MSTS_Swap will create a 'skeleton' MSTS Registry key, based on a user-selected MSTS/ORTS installation.
The latest version (1.8) has been available for more than a year! ( msts_swap_v1_8.zip )

Bad news!

Uninstalled MSTS and removed two related residual registry keys.

Re-installed MSTS (without all of the updates/extras at this time) into -

H:\Microsoft Games\Train Simulator

Ran Route Riter as a test, but after Route Riter splash screen, once again got the nuisance 380 error!!!!

Uninstalled Route Riter and then re-installed Route Riter into -

H:\Route_Riter

And again received the 380 error after trying to run Route Riter!!

Triple checked that Java runtime had the "classes" sub-directory and all of the files from Route Riter TSUtil sub-directory were copied to the classes sub-directory.

What to do now!?

And what about the Digital Rails version of Route Riter? I understand that this version is relatively stable and nuisance free with respect to the original Route Riter which is rapidly becoming a real pain trying to get it to run properly!!!!?

Actually I thought I had a copy of Digital Rails Route Riter but I can't seem to locate it now!?

You MUST install MSTS from its CDs (or backed up .iso files) to get the correct Registry entries.

Not remotely true.

I've manually added the Reg entries for over ten years without needing to mount an ISO or load from CD.

The Reg file is floating around the forums somewhere but does need to be customized by the end user to get the directory paths set to match their installation.

When you install RouteRiter it uses the MSTS registry entries to know where everything is.
MSTS first, then RouteRiter. It's a pain in the arse but that's the way it works..

This is what I've used for the last 10 years....

1) copy this into Notepad or another text editor
2) change out the D:\\MSTS references (Path, RouteExtractorPath, EXE Path) to reflect your own installation paths
3) Save as "MSTS.reg"
4) "Open" the file to import into your own registry (you'll be prompted to allow the registry to be modified)

Thanks for the very detailed post!! This detail has been noted for any future issues regarding Route Riter.

I have just managed to get Route Riter running properly at last!!

After further forum searches, I found this post by Mike Simpson himself regarding the 380 error. It was suggested that a registry entry should be deleted and that should hopefully resolve the 380 error problem. The following is an excerpt of Mike's post -

Run regedit from the Start button and go to:-

HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\VB and VBA Program Settings

Under this Key you should see Route_Riter � Right click on Route_Riter and select Delete

Next time you run RR all should be well


I did this procedure and now Route Riter runs fine!!!

The only outstanding issue is I have to now (carefully) update and add custom changes to locomotives and cars, including custom sounds. These custom changes were previously saved prior to uninstalling MSTS. This updating will take quite some time, maybe many hours!
