    Hi,
IndRailv2 is designed to run in MSTS. The batch file copies a large number of files from the default MSTS installation.
If you don't have MSTS, you can't run this route! PLEASE see the readme!!
If you DO have MSTS installed, add IndRailv2 into that installation and then run the installme.bat file to complete the installation.

    Cheers,
    Ged

    To amplify what Ged said:

The files that are copied are things like building and scenery shapes and textures, copied from default routes into the indrailv2 route.

You don't actually need MSTS to run the route, you need the default routes that come with MSTS so that those files can be copied by the batch file.

Last I checked you can find MSTS on ebay or Amazon. This issue will come up again. The simplest way to resolve it is to obtain a MSTS copy, even if you do not use it for anything other than "raw material" for routes like this. Or you can choose to run newer routes that do not depend on MSTS files.

You could do the research and compile one, and contribute to the community, that's an aspect of this hobby.

To answer your question...no one knows what your area of interest in routes is....so that's a wide ranging question you've asked...but generally...payware routes do not require the msts routes to run bat files. I also think some European routes do not require them. IR routes I'm not certain, know nothing about them.

My advice is to look at the download information about the route and the documentation to see if it requires running a bat file.

You can probably run the route without running the batch file - you would just be missing a few scenery items here and there. The default scenery items are fairly low quality... you can dig thru the output log to see what shapes failed for load, and look for replacement default objects.

Most newer routes do not seem to use .bat files.
Paul Charland's US and Canadian routes do not use .bat files (for example).

I can, actually. You can never go wrong with these:

Western Railways v7 by Apurv Soni (probably the largest Indian freeware route) available on trainsim

Southern Railway v2 Final Phase by Karthik Iyer (you'll find it here: https://sites.google.com/view/srv2route/home)

IR South Western Railways v2 by Yashas BN (also available on trainsim)

You can also check out IRTS.in for its route collection, since many creators exclusively release their routes there.

As far as IRv2 is concerned, the fact that the route length is less than 1/4th of its real length, combined with sparse signalling that fails often, leaving AI trains stranded behind one another, made it a route I didn't really like. However, considering the fact that it came out in 2007, I'd cut it some slack.

True, and the same applies to Indian routes released after ~2014 as well

Any routes from Trainsimulations, including the free Scenic Sub route, do not require any MSTS objects.
