Thread: Gray cars showing

    Default Gray cars showing

I'm a little stumped on this one, new to me. I load the car up, and it shows just fine in the summertime on the Mullan Pass, Ruel Sub, and the Dominion Atlantic Route.

I load the same set up, in fall/autumn and it appears gray, not textures, on the three routes. I haven't checked winter or spring, but found this a bit odd..

Currently using Open Rails v1.4 with "Load DDS textures in preference of ACE" Although, none of the files in the consist use DDS, and all other cars load just fine in the Autumn selection.

I had this problem once. Turned out that the sd file for the car, can't remember if it was in the OpenRails folder or not. was looking for an altenate texture for the season. just make sure that you sd file has this line in it; ESD_Alternative_Texture ( 0 ). Anything other than a 0 will cause the issue. hope that this helps.

    Hi Shawn,

Just a guess but... open one of the offending car's SD foles and see if there is anything but a "0" in the alternative texture line.

Yep, that was the culprit. Simple solution. Deleted the .SD files. Honestly with ORTS, they aren't needed.

    Thanks guys!

Actually the SD Alternate Texture entries ARE used by OR as shown in this example.
It's just the fact in this case alternate textures usually are not provided for most rolling stock but there are some models that do and look very nice with snow textures.
It's the old copied wagon files syndrome that shows up. At least OR plugs in a default texture and logs the error rather than crashing like MSTS did.
One small step in the right direction!

    regards,
Worst part, MSTS never gave a reason why it didn't work properly either, thankfully ORTS gives you some sort of info. Locomotives and Rolling Stock wise, I typically don't keep the .sd files. Never did think of making winter textures for the items, however, I never was that good at making snow look realistic on equipment..

The Airbrush Tool in GIMP works great for this purpose.
