Thread: Freight Cars & Locomotives

    Question Freight Cars & Locomotives

Why is There No Better Selection of Locomotives and Freight Cars For Run8?
When Trainsim First Came Along it Took very little Time for A library to Be Created With a Great Selection of Freight Cars & Engines.
Run 8 Has been Around for a While Now and Yet The Selection of Available Cars and locomotives is Very limited and Only Available From the Run 8 Sight!
Is there No One Out there who can Create More Cars and locomotives that can be used for Run8 or is Run 8 Going to Monopolize the Selection of What They Want.
I Have E-Mailed them About this and Never Got a Reply.

    Thankyou,

Though I would agree that it would be nice to see more content, and bring on 3rd party creators, it's their baby.

I'm sure there is plenty of people out there willing to produce content. But it's their call. Since there are no editors and John has been public saying no editors are coming don't expect anything but official releases down the road. Hopefully more trusted 3rd party producers can team up with them and come aboard.

    Thanks

Run 8 Studios create the content.
It is their product and production is handled by them.
Therefore, it's their right to decide what they will create and what they will provide.

It would be nice to see some more varied content, particularly older locomotives and freight/passenger stock. This has been suggested a few times but does not seem to be a high priority. I also think Run 8 would be a great place to allow steam traction to stretch its legs.

Biggest issue at the moment with our current lousy exchange rate is that buying all those small packs of locomotives or freight cars adds up to a not inconsiderable sum, if you don't want to see the R8 boxcar placeholders everywhere. Maybe they will have a Xmas sale this year (not holding my breath!).

well......... I'll be the conspiracy nut. Like TSW I don't think Run8 will come fourth with any package that would allow one to make their own content or design routes. I think Run8 (and TSW) are deeply afraid us meager mortals will come up with much better content/routes than the house product. I don't play either Run8 or TSW because of the limitations and I've personally found that the Run8 people are both rude and arrogant. DTG just ignores everyone.

Some people are just used to the concept of innovation through competition, that's all.

I have a hard time squaring this from the capitalists of Orange County.

I suppose what people think of one's attitude is up for debate, I'll stay out of that one.

But I will say this. DTG has a much bigger budget and team to pump out all kind of content which brings in money. Run8 doesn't have that. Which also plays into the market for which their sim represents. There is only so much money to be made of a core program, especially in a micro-niche. This isn't like Flight Simulator which is a much more popular niche, or another popular franchise outside of the simulator realm.

They are relying on DLC to continue to make money. 3 versions in 10 years for Run8. How many years as TSW been around for. What's changed in TSW vs Run8. Quality over quantity.

I would love to see some kind of way of bringing in more talent where Run8 could take a cut. I highly dobut it's about fear of better models outshining them it has to do with money and this is a business.

    Thanks

I believe long ago the Team brought it out, they don't wish to open things up to Mods / Enhancements, for safety reasons. They spoke it was hard enough a never-ending process helping support customers with the basics, installs, DLC, lost this, lost that etc. Can't blame them, as surely can envision never ending cries for support when a Mod / Enhancement destroys the core program. Not to mention possible headaches those Mods / Enhancements may cause for the MP side of the sim. I'm one that really enjoys being creative, no matter the title, but, understand where they're coming from in those regards.
Perhaps one day they may create a toolkit to go alongside the core program allowing for repaints at the very least which they know works / plays nicely with the base sim, haven designed the toolkit themselves while allowing for some creativity, perhaps even bring in additional funds along the way.
