Default Removing Images from Quoted Replies

I had an idea on a way to save server space. People post screenshots for everyone to view. Some post several screenshots at once and some people like to comment, sometimes just to say 'nice shot'. Instead of just saying "Nice shots Fred" they quote the post and they screenshot(s) are included in the reply. The average screenshot these days would be about 600 KB, and they maximum number of screenshots per post is ten, so a reply to a post that is quoted could be 6 MB just to say 'nice shots'. This happens daily, and even with the new retention being a couple of years this would add up.

ET is set up so you can quote any post your reply to but if that post has attachments or images, they are removed from the reply. Might consider doing something like that here.

That won't actually save any space because the attachments are only saved once. They do chew up bandwidth, though.

Getting rid of older attachments will save space. That's why screenshot threads that are older than 10 years have already been zapped.

OK, so when we see all the images in the reply they are just a link to the original post.

Correct. The software saves the attachment and assigns it an attachment id, and that's what gets re-rendered in the replies.

More and more people seem to be using external hosting for their screenshots, which really does help a lot.

Yes, been using Imgbox.com for years so Trainsim is just posting a link and not hosting an image.
