Microsoft Train Simulator or OpenRails

Hi

I'm just curious, why would anyone continue with Microsoft Train Simulator
and not just change over to OR?

A question asked in complete ignorance, so please forgive me.

I simply installed OR and added my entire MSTS content to OR.

And it has ben th best improvement ever.

Simple answer: Open Rails is not a 100% compatible replacement for MSTS. Anomalies and graphical glitches can occur in OR when running legacy MSTS routes. Example: the classic Sea View fantasy route, for one. While I do mostly run OR now, it's version 1.4, again, to avoid the unresolved bugs in OR version 1.5.

Let's hope your curious question doesn't spark the tribal "anything old is bad, that's not OR's fault" responses so often seen on here. Legacy routes were created for MSTS, not for Open Rails, we all know that. And those of us who run legacy routes know from experience that some MSTS content - like those original legacy routes - will not always display as was intended when run in Open Rails.

Dave -- well said, I'm sure that MSTS will always be around -- as long as people can accommodate to new operating systems.
The "tribal" dialogue is frankly of waste of time and energy.

My sympathies, I believe I recall some of those days, and not too fondly at times.

I have two computers, a 6-year-old laptop with Windows 10 and a 15-year-old desktop with XP. The desktop computer actually runs better except it can't handle an Internet connection, which is why I got the laptop. At the time, I was on a tight budget, so I got the cheapest laptop I could. Neither computer can handle Open Rails. The frame rate looks like a fast slide show, and sometimes OR quits. I have to turn the graphics down on Train Simulator to run it, but it works. Moving to the Philippines in a few years is a possibility, so I plan to hold onto both computers until we mover or until one computer dies. And I'll run Train Simulator till then, I guess.

Sounds like me. Both of my computers date from 2010 though one was upgraded with a new Mobo, processor,
and more memory in 2015. The un-updated one has Win-xp and I keep it just in case the other, with Win-7
burps. My supplier found we could not update the Win-7 machine and thus to go to Win-10 he would have to
reformat the "C" drive to wipe it and start from scratch. Probably happen some time this year though and I
have my MSTS, TSRE, TSM, and ORTS installs on other drives, though MSTS would have to be reloaded from
scratch & new clones set up. At the first of the year, I backed up all MSTS material to an external drive and
I do incremental backups to flash-drives as I piddle with routes. My wife knows that I have two addictions.
Train Simulation and volunteering on the C&TS which I do for 10 days (Her allowed max.) a year, as a docent
but 2023 is likely my last year. At 84 I don't want to be a liability.
