    Default ORTS Monogame Z-Fighting - Flicker/Flashing Improvement

    Hi Folks,

Just a heads up - the latest version of Monogame ORTS [139] has a substantial improvement to the dreaded Z-Fighting we've had with the 64 bit version of Open Rails - for years. This affected building windows - lettering on rolling stock - signals - vegetation - etc - anywhere two parallel faces existed in close proximity to each other.

I believe this flashing still exists in the Stable and Unstable versions of the main ORTS pipeline. I don't know how features are promulgated between the Monogame and normal versions of ORTS. For example: Carlo's Monogame has a fix that vastly improves the flickering associated with ground transfers - which has been in place for a long time - and has never migrated back to the normal versions.

Great news, thanks very much, Scott!
Yes, there seems to be a strange break between the 2 platforms that I can't wrap my head around. I much prefer MG, but there are features I am interested in taking advantage of in the newer versions of OR.

    Hi Neil,

Happy to help. This is a pretty BIG DEAL for me.

The Z fighting is reduced somewhat in the latest Testing versions.

You still see a lot of flickering in the distance with building windows, signs, etc., but at least the ballast and level crossings calm down the closer you get to them. Previously they would flicker like crazy the whole time they were rendered.

Not sure if it's a Z-buffer, or if objects are now rendering at a higher LOD to "power through" the flicker. There has been a noticeable slow-down in performance, however.
