MSTS/OR Monon 50 Foot PS Boxcars. In 1966, ten insulated boxcars leased from Fruit Growers Express (FGEX). The Fruit Growers Express cars retained their "RBNX" reporting marks, signifying their Association of American Railroads RBL insulated boxcar classification while on the Monon. These cars were numbered 90261 through 90027. They were 50-foot riveted-side cars with eight foot plug doors and 3-4 improved dreadnaught ends, apparently built in their Alexandria, VA, car shop in August 1961. The cars were painted FGEX yellow with the typical black lettering and striping. The car ends were painted boxcar red and the roofs were painted aluminum, as was the FGEX practice at the time. Although it is unclear as to when these cars were leased by the Monon, they received a unique lettering at the time. The Monon's 36 diameter circle "M" herald was neatly incorporated into the Fruit Growers dual horizontal stripe paint scheme on each car side. A 24-inch high stylized black "Monon" was also added to each side underneath the herald. There were minor variations from car to car, but this was a classic paint scheme made exceptional by the Monon additions to the lettering. The ten cars stayed on lease to the Monon (L&N after August 1971) at least through the mid-1970's. By Michelle.

MSTS/OR St. Louis - San Francisco Railway 50 Foot Boxcars. Eleven 50 foot plug door box cars for the Frisco railroad. The Frisco had a large amount of these cars for various duties and was one of the more numerous cars on the railroad itself. When the BN took over in the 1980's the Railroad still had a large fleet of these cars. The company bought both versions of the car with either smooth sides or riveted. During a class program maintenance visit to the shop most of the cars received new exterior post plug doors. At this time they were also repainted red with all white lettering. Model by SLI TS. MSTS/OR Fruit Grower Express Boxcars. In 1980 the FGE company started looking for replacement cars. But the price for a new car was deemed too expensive. So the company started it own refurbishing program. Of all the cars the company owned nearly half were beyond repair. Those that could be saved were stripped completely down to the bare frame all the rust, grime and old paint was removed and the frame inspected for cracks. New floors, interior walls, interior supports, loading systems, and roofs. While brakes, wheels, Bogey assemblies were rebuilt and refurbished. These cars cost half the price of a new car. These cars were all painted Reefer Yellow and painted with the Solid Gold logo. The company had a rebuilding plant in Alexandra Va. And as cars were sent in for rebuilding the rebuilt cars would head back to railroads along the East coast of the US. Those cars kept in company service were giving the reporting marks FGER.
